 Dear visitor,

Welcome to the community of Hille.

The community of Hille, which consists of  the 9 villages Hartum, Hille, Holzhausen II, Eickhorst, Nordhemmern, Oberlübbe, Rothenuffeln, Südhemmern and Unterlübbe, just celebrated its 30th anniversary. It was created in 1973 as a result of local government restructuring. Approximately 16.800 inhabitants live in the nine villages of which Hille is the biggest.

The territory of the community of 103 km² stretches from the northern slope of the Wiehen mountains (rather a big forest than huge mountains) into the Northern lowland plain of Germany and on the Westphalian Mill Road. The Mittelland canal flows through the territory of the community in east-west direction.

Special features of the landscape are the "Großes Torfmoor ( Large peat bog)" one of the last wet biotopes in East Westphalia. (Nature reserve) and the Wiehen mountains. The north of Hille is characterised by extensive forests. There are good possibilities for rambling and cycling on marked roads. Special sights are the restored windmills in the villages of Eickhorst and Südhemmern,(part of the Westphalian Road of Mills) demonstrating milling and baking on fixed dates, the industrial museum “ehemalige Kornbrennerei (former corn schnapps destillery) Meyer”, churches, chapels and historic farm houses. Twice a year, in April and September, the market of Hille takes place. The market has an over 425 year-old tradition. Initially it was a livestock and junk market and has now developed into a fun fair with a comprehensive trade exhibition during the spring market.

The village of Rothenuffeln received state approval in 1977 as a health resort with health treatments. Healing successes are reached at rheumatism, skin and female illnesses. Curing facilities: Calcium sulphate well (state approved), mud an sulphur bath, massages. The spa Rothenuffeln, located between the Wiehen mountains and the peat bog, is an ideal place for rest cures due to the rural quietness. Traditional spas with their own mineral springs, mud baths and the cure park support healing processes and invite for recuperation.

The economical structure of the community is characterised by various industrial, commercial and trade manufacturing, trading and service companies. The harbour of the Mittelland canal with a commercial logistic centre in the vicinity of the community of Hille has to be emphasised as an important service facility.
